Optical gear has come a long ways in the previous few years. Back in the day, when you looked through a ordinary set of high powered binoculars, you would notice a lot of movement, and unless you carried around a bulky tripod and set it up whenever you wanted to look at something, you could not get rid of it.
This shaking would come about when you hold a pair of high powered binoculars up to your eyes and naturally the higher the power of the binoculars, the more shaking you would see, unless you where using a tripod to sustain them.
The Canon 12x36 IS II binoculars use something called image stability to help eliminate any natural movement.
The image stability on these binoculars cuts down and basically gets rid of any natural shaking that can result from holding the binoculars with your hands.

If you want a pair of binoculars that you can use in the rain without the lenses fogging up, the Canon 12x36 IS II binoculars are good for you because they are water resistant, and the optics will not fog up in the rain. There is also a wide field view with these binoculars which lets more light in and gives you a clearer image. If you wear eyeglasses while viewing it's not a problem because the Canon 12x36 binoculars have a long eye relief just for that.
Using the image stability feature on the Canon 12x36 IS II binoculars makes it look like you are standing still when in a moving vehicle making them the ideal choice for using when going on safari or anyplace else that you are mobile.
Viewing the night sky with these binoculars is like looking through a telescope on a tripod, except for there is no tripod, only the IS feature, even though you could set one up if you like. These binoculars do get a bit heavy when looking through them for a long period of time but other than that they are worth their weight in gold. Lots of optical power and a shake free view mean no more setting up a bulky tripod each time you want to view.
