NYTimes.com – Digital Binoculars

NYTimes.com David Pogue reviews a variety of Digital Binoculars.
Video Rating: 4 / 5

This is my first video dubbed with audio. In this little experiment I am using my Sony DSC P72 Digital camera in 640 VGA MPEG video mode to capture scenes of a tractor tire with and without the aid of my Leupold 7x Binoculars. Once the video was captured I extracted one frame of the unmagnified tractor tire and one frame of the magnified tractor tire. I pasted each snapshot into visio alongside a calibrated ruler. It looks like these Leupold Binocs really are 7 power.

  6. Wife would get pissed.

  7. god you need a woman !

  8. Or divide the objective lens by the exit pupil (the light seen through the eye lens when held away from your eyes) to get the magnification.

  9. tnx for the wid, helped quickly make shore that power is measured as I thought!

  10. Good stuff. Just got a pair of 17x binos in the post. I’ll have to try this technique out. Cheers.

  11. That was a nice tip bro… im gonna try it my self

  12. Ignore the bad comments. I enjoyed your video because I am into astronomy, telescopes and binoculars and your video proved a good point. Thanks for the video, it was a good way to find out power in binoculars. :)

  13. This would be a good demo for Physics class. They used to do a lot of in class experiments – like, hang a bowling ball from the ceiling, get back in the corner and hold it up to the nose (you’d be a fool to push), let it swing clear across the room and (gasp) almost hit the nose – proving whether you REALLY believe the theory.

  14. what is the point in this you crape!

  15. wow very interesteing!

  16. Not if nobody sees it..

  17. And if I hold my thumb and index finger like this I can CRUSH YOUR HEAD!

  18. neet, very interesting, cool even…thanks for the lesson
